Thousands of students across India who are preparing for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other top engineering colleges have received important relief from IIT Roorkee. The institute has announced a special provision for students whose Class 12 marks are currently below the required eligibility criteria but who have applied for re-evaluation or verification of their answer sheets.
The decision comes amid concerns raised by many students after the declaration of Class 12 board examination results. Several students claimed that they received lower marks than expected and attributed the issue to the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used in evaluation. As a result, a large number of students submitted requests for re-checking, verification, or re-evaluation of their answer sheets.
Recognising the difficulties faced by such students, IIT Roorkee has clarified that they will not be immediately excluded from the admission process. Instead, they will be allowed to participate in counselling and seat allocation procedures while waiting for the outcome of their re-evaluation requests.
This announcement has provided hope to many students who performed well in JEE Main or JEE Advanced examinations but were worried that lower board examination marks might prevent them from securing admission to their preferred engineering institutions.
Relief for students
According to IIT Roorkee, students whose Class 12 marks are currently below the minimum eligibility requirement can still participate in the counselling process.
For students belonging to the General, OBC-NCL, and EWS categories, the required minimum marks in Class 12 are 75 percent. For students belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories, the required minimum marks are 65 percent.
Even if students currently have marks below these limits, they can still fill in their choices during counselling. Their seats will be allocated according to their ranks in JEE examinations and the normal counselling procedure.
However, there is an important condition. Students must obtain revised marks after re-evaluation or verification that meet the required eligibility criteria. Once the revised marks are available, they must send their updated scorecards to IIT Roorkee through the official email address provided by the institute.
The deadline for submitting revised scorecards is July 15, 2026.
If the revised marks satisfy the eligibility requirements, the student will be allowed admission to the seat that was allocated to them after the completion of the fourth round of counselling.
This arrangement ensures that deserving students are not disadvantaged simply because the re-evaluation process takes time.
The move has been welcomed by students and parents, as it allows candidates to continue participating in the admission process while waiting for corrections in their board examination results.
Many students feared losing valuable opportunities if re-evaluation results were announced after counselling rounds had already progressed. The new clarification helps remove that uncertainty and gives students a fair chance to secure admission.

Counselling process continues
While IIT Roorkee has provided this special relaxation for students awaiting revised marks, there has been no official announcement regarding a general relaxation of the minimum marks requirement for IIT admissions.
Students must still eventually meet the prescribed eligibility criteria if they wish to confirm their admission.
Meanwhile, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has already begun preparations for the 2026 admission season. JoSAA is responsible for conducting counselling and seat allocation for IITs, National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other participating institutions.
This year, the seat matrix has seen a significant increase. Reports indicate that around 4,470 additional seats have been added across participating institutions. The increase is expected to provide more opportunities for engineering aspirants seeking admission through the JoSAA counselling process.
Students wishing to participate in counselling must visit the official JoSAA website and complete the registration process. They need to log in using their JEE Main or JEE Advanced application credentials. After logging in, candidates can fill their preferred choices of institutes and courses.
The choice-filling process is one of the most important stages of counselling because it determines the order in which students wish to be considered for available seats. Candidates are advised to carefully review all options before locking their choices.
Once a seat is allotted, students must complete the necessary acceptance procedures. Although there is no registration fee for JoSAA counselling, candidates receiving a seat allotment must pay a seat acceptance and processing fee of ₹5,000 when a seat is offered to them for the first time.
Students should regularly check official websites for updates regarding counselling schedules, seat allotment rounds, document verification procedures, and admission deadlines.
The latest clarification from IIT Roorkee is especially important for students whose board examination marks are under review. It allows them to continue with counselling without losing their chance at admission. However, they must ensure that their revised marks meet the required eligibility standards and that the updated scorecards are submitted before the prescribed deadline.
For many students, this decision offers much-needed relief and ensures that a pending re-evaluation result does not stand in the way of their dream of studying at an IIT or another leading engineering institution.
